Hi All,

My first time on the CUMBERLAND list.

Searching for information on my maternal g-grandfather John PILKINGTON
allegedly born c 1851 in Keswick, Cumberland. (according to the 1881 census
for Co. Durham).

No entry for John in the G.R.O. Indexes between 1848 and 1852 inclusive,
although there is an entry for a John in Whitehaven in the September qtr of
1848 (probably too early).

There appears to have been no PILKINGTON's in Keswick during the 1851
census.

I believe that John may have been the son of a soldier serving in the
Keswick area and possibly was not registered (locally) at birth.

My question is does anyone know of any army barracks local to Keswick during
the 1840's-1850's and/or the regiments serving at those barracks at that
time.?

John's first born a daughter Susan was b. 1870 in (again according to the
1881 census for Co. Durham) Jerusalem (BS) Turkey, which again smacks of an
army connection.

Any assistance will be gratefully received.

best regards

Ray
