Hi Julie,
Depends what you want to find out really. If it's just family-tree issues, then
the best bet is to consult the index of birth's, marriages and deaths (which is
usually available in libraries - it certainly is in Carlisle's main one), and
get birth and marriage certs for likely-looking candidates. These give both the
parent's names (assuming not illegitimate). Once this process has taken you
backto the 1841-1891 period, you can use the 10-yearly census returns (again
usually available at the library) - this gives every one at a house, with their
inter-relationships, ages, occupations, and where born. Earlier than 1841,
you'll have to rely on parish records, and the Mormon index (IGI).
If it's more personal information, then I have no idea - my own research is so
far limited to discovering the individuals in my tree, not more personal stuff.
However, I think "wills" could be useful. I think these are usually available
in County Record offices. Other than that, perhaps scouring local newspapers of
the day for personal family announcements ?
