Richard, Grange-over-Sands is a small town in Cumbria situated at the
mouth of the river Kent. The town over looks Morecambe Bay.
Nowadays it is a minor holiday resort with an attractive promenade. It
is overlooked from behind by Hampsfield Fell and it is not far from the
ancient priory of Cartmel.
Morecambe Bay is a fairly large expanse of sand banks and wet land and
is I think a protected bird sanctuary.
Before the railways came, in the days of the stage coach the coaches
were guided across the estuary sands by the men of one particular local
family who were reputed to be the only people who could find the route
which changed seasonally. Up to a few years ago their descendants still
lived there.
I am afraid I don't know the name of the parish, I wouldn't think there
is more than one.
Your g.grandfather definitely wouldn't have set out on a ship from
Grange for Canada . The nearest points of departure would have been
Liverpool in Lancashire (although Grange was then also in Lancashire) or
perhaps Glasgow on the Clyde in Scotland.
