I have found the LDS Family History Library to be a great help. Although I
have not worked through one of the branch libraries, the main library in
Salt Lake City is really good to work with. Since this past fall, I have
used their services to order some 40 certificates (financed by donantions
from family members, of course). I give the FHL a check for US$$ and they
handle any exchange rates necessary. It takes four to five weeks to get
them back -- mailed directly to my home address. Of the batches I've gotten
back so far, only two certs have not been found. One of them was my
fault -- I provided the wrong index info.
The other one was clearly an error in the index. I proved it by
photocopying both the microfiche and microfilm copies of the index at the
library. Once I showed them the wrong index, the library folks are working
with their contact in London, to see about finding the cert. Meanwhile, via
this Cumberland Rootweb egroup, I asked for help. Les Strong was kind
enough to go to the local records office and find the obtain the cert for
me. Meanwhile, the search via the FHL in SLC is still pending.
If I remember correctly, the LDS Church's new web site www.familysearch.org
has the addresses of the local Family History Centers throughout the US. If
you have one within a reasonable traveling distance (in Utah, that means
within 80 to 100 miles) you ought to see what they can do for you.
Hope this helps.
