Robyn,
What records are you chasing? That'll determine the Archive or Record
Office that you need to contact. Most of the records for the Diocese of
Carlisle would be in the Carlisle Record Office. Other material eg Probate
involving more than one Diocese would be with Arch-Diocesan Records of York,
or if involving Probate of someone dying in Australia with land still held
in England, then it would be the PCC Canterbury.
Incidentally, when the C of E Parish of Sydney was founded in 1788 it was
part of the Diocese of Calcutta.
