I am pleased to tell you that my problem is solved following a kind message
from Elizabeth Newberry. Despite checking Options/Security I had not
noticed that since downloading the update to Outlook Express the box saying
"Do not allow attachments to be saved etc." had a tick in it where it hadn't
beforehand. All is well now.

May I thank all who sent me helpful messages, they were much appreciated.
