Re: Smykals

I have come across this spelling on some immigration lists. Most seem to come from Austria-Hungary with departures from Hamburg Germany. It depends on the time frame you are checking. Boundaries changed during the wars or just local changes.

My family names are spelled: Sezmantyk, Semancik, Smancik, Semanyck plus others. I think it depended on who the immigration agent was. They couldn't understand everyone. One grandfather was Matte Petrovic but his name was changed to Mike A. Petrovich (just A - because he didn't know they wanted his middle name) . If you have any documents, go by that info and the soundex. Consider all possibilities. because families and nationalities stayed together if they immigrated at about the same time. My Semanciks are found in PA, OH, IN and WA just off the top of my head.

Part of my family are German-Russians. I can find same family names from Bessarabia that stayed together when they settled in North Dakota. So for the last 150 yrs. I find Eckroths, Geiss, Kautzmans and others all living near each other.

Hang in there. You've connected to a good site!

Jane
