James Mathias Hackett was my great-grandfather, I have been able to research most details relating to him and his family here in Australia. However, after that period I have so far had no success, the following is a brief outline of James Mathias.
James was born to John and Mary, nee Bryan, in Tipperary, Ireland about 1831, Esther Henrietta, nee Lee, was born about 1840, in Dublin, she was the daughter of James George Lee, a sergeant of police or army.
According to information supplied by James when registering births of their children they were married on August 28, 1856, however, the information supplied by Esther, she gives the marriage date as August 26, 1855. They both agreed on their place of marriage, Dublin, on the birth certificate of one child, George Gregory, who died within a year of his birth, Esthers name is recorded as Hester, this is very likely a mistake, as both names are made up of the same letters.
Army records held at the Mitchell Library, Sydney, have James as a Serjeant in the 77th Regiment when the regiment came to New South Wales in 1857, as was the custom in those days his family was with him. Although, not fully researched it appears that James was in the 77th or Royal Irish Regiment for many years, records show that during that time he saw active service in the Crimean war and was awarded medals for Distinguished Service and Bravery.
More research is needed as to when James and his family left the Army and came to the colony of New South Wales.
Help in finding any information relating to James or Esther, their parents or siblings would be appreciated.
Regards
Wallace Russell
