In the hope that this might be useful to others on the list I will relate my
Edmond/Edward story.
My gg-grandfather was married in Upperchurch, Co. Tipperary in 1841 as
Edmund Magrath. By the 1855 NYS Census he had become Edmond McGraw. He
reverted back to McGrath briefly in 1868 and was Edward McGraw in 1874. His
death certificate has him listed as Edmond McGraw. On his sons' death
certifcates in the 1920's Michael (my g-grandfather) and John (father of
John J. McGraw - Mgr of NY Giants for you baseball fans) had him listed as
Edward McGraw.
Son Michael McGraw had a son Edmond C. McGraw (my grandfather)who was always
Edward C. McGraw as far as we knew. He even had a son named Edward C.
McGraw, Jr. It was only after my grandfather's death in 1979 that we
discovered that his real name was Edmond, everyone had always called him Ed.
Before he could finalize the paperwork associated with my grandfather's
estate my father had to track down a childhood friend of my grandfather and
have him write a letter declaring the he had known Edward C. McGraw all his
life and that Edmond and Edward were indeed the same person.
You just never think to ask your parents if they are using an alias.
Best Regards,
Mike McGraw

Well, I've got them too!
My GGGF, "Ned" (on his daughters Baptism Record - Ellen in 1851 and Judith
in 1854), then he was Edmund (on his son's Marriage Registration - Daniel in
1869), then he was Edward (died Feb 20, 1887- on the family marker erected
by his grandson <my grandfather, Daniel> at Couraganeen Church).
Ned/Edmund/Edward lived in the townland of Kyleannagh.
And, there was a murdered Edward Madden and a ballad written (1848) about
his murder's (the Cody brothers), the ballad says Edmund.
So I think Richard is on to something!
