Barry:
The U.S. National Archives & Records Administration (Washington, D.C.) holds the
original military service records for Army, Navy and Marine veterans of the
Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Seminole War, Mexican War, Indian Wars and the
Civil War (War Between the States). Only a handful of records for U.S. Colored
Troops units in the Civil War are available online from NARA. Plans are afoot
to transfer more records to the NARA website, but i suspect the Bush
Administration will not budget money to fund the project, although I might be
wrong.
Prior to World War I, no one in the military had an official service number. All
Civil War veterans' records are indexed on microfilm at NARA in Washington.
Union veterans' pension records are also at NARA Washington and are indexed as
well.
Since I had two Irish-American ancestors who served in the Union Army during the
U.S. Civil War, I have done a great deal of work with these records (I have also
worked in civil war history research since 1977 or thereabouts).
Any other questions about NARA and its records holdings?
