Thanks Cousin Peter and to the rest of my Cousins [most of Co. Tipperary], I
think we might all begin doing more about the ancient history and genealogy
of our various surnames in Tipperary to keep us occupied while we beat our
heads bloody on the "1800 brick wall" and wait for a new archbishop to be
appointed. Just because you can't yet find your GGGGGgrandfather doesn't
mean you can't dig up some marvelous stuff about the O'Dwyer's or
O'Dougherty's and our other families in the history of the area to share
with the group. I'd like to be better able to pin down which families might
have been where c. 1650 before Cromwell messed up all our families lives. Or
perhaps what it was like at the time the Anglo-Norman Invasion occurred. Or
information about which families owned which ancient monasteries in Co.
Tipperary. I think it may give us more of a sense of who we were and flesh
out more our collective family histories.

One of the things I would love to see is a listing of the ancient Tipperary
placenames, parish by parish, and what they meant. As you come across these,
please post them to the list and we might be able to put together some
databases eventually. Jean Skar's webpage still has the names of all the
townlands, but we are missing lots of the little villages, too. Some of the
websites for the parishes and towns carry this sort of thing. How many
people realize that a massive battle against the Vikings was fought at
Solohead? How many people know about the Solohead Massacre and how it kicked
off the war of Independence?

CELT has a LOCUS project going at http://www.ucc.ie/locus/ and they are
putting together the ancient placenames found in the Annals and other
manuscripts. There are other excellent links on this page to other CELT
projects that you might find interesting. As this progresses, we should be
able to pick out the Tipperary references for a sub database. It has only
been finished through C so far and is a massive project.

The CELT project list of published texts begins at
http://www.ucc.ie/celt/publishd.html for anyone interested in the ancient
manuscripts; some are translated and some are not.

A group is putting together a list of the ancient Irish words at
http://www.aber.ac.uk/~awcwww/s/p5_lexicon.html

This is very old Gaelic and not anything like what is currently spoken and
it is only "complete" through the letter M so far. It takes quite a while to
download, so be patient if you are interested in this sort of thing.

I also belong to an Irish Placenames Group that is attempting to put
together the locations of the ancient tribes and families of Munster from
the Iron Age through the very early Medieval ages, and then do some tracking
of the families up through the late medieval period. We are still in Kerry
and I will keep you posted as we hit Limerick and Tipperary and Cork. Some
amazing information comes out of these discussions. Be on the look-out for
information on the ancient marriages and genealogy charts for us Tipps and
for info on the placenames and villages to share with the list. I'll have an
article on the web on St. Berrichert's Kyle in the Glen of Aherlow coming
out any day now and I will let you know when it is available.

There are groups on Irish Archaeology and other topics to join if you have
some expertise in those sorts of things.

Janet
