I am new to the mailing list. I have been reading about the difficulty in
finding the records in the Diocese of Cashel and Emily in Co. Tipperary.
(The records are copyrighted by the Archbishop)
This I know to be true! I have been there, sat in a little room, while they
went and checked their records, repeatedly telling me that they'd "found" my
ancestor. I kept paying for more and more searches and never found his
birth record or any on his siblings or parents. It is my conclusion that
there is no birth record for my ancestor! Beware of using Heritage
Centers. They are so anxious to find your ancestor they will find "any" who
happens to match (there are many common names in Ireland!) They will go so
far as to tell you that birth dates can be different and parent's names
changed!!!!
My success in the Cashel and Emily Diocese happened when I contacted the
Parish Priest of where my ancestors came from. He checked his records for
me then allowed me to view them and copy them. These records were the
children of my ancestor.
I was able to find out who the Parish Priest was before arriving in Ireland
by contacting the host of IreAtlas. (Who has now passed away) He had
directories and addresses of all the Catholic Parishes. I am assuming that
the new host of IreAtlas would have those directories now.
1. When you write a Parish Priest use the proper language when addressing
him. He could be a Very Reverend....
2. Always send a SASE for the return and send MONEY. When we were there we
gave the Priest an American $20. They are not adverse to this as they get to
keep the money themselves instead of the Diocese. After all, this is their
livelihood.
3. Also ask for the address of a historian in the Parish who you might be
able to write to. (There is always a historian who is very knowledgeable,
has possibly written a book, or who has collected past records)
4. Then contact this historian and send MONEY.
5. If you receive a reply please sent a little gift as an appreciation.
Some little memento from America or Australia, where ever you are
from.
I had one of the historians ask for "Western" souvenirs from my state before
he would check his records! He had gotten special permission to copy all
death records at the local hospitals in his Parish. It listed the cause of
death as well as where they were from, etc. He had them all in a red metal
file box!!!!
I wrote to another historian of my family's Parish, sent him $50 and he
copied the parts of his out-of-print-book and sent them.
Most Irish are very helpful and more than willing. Most are of very humble
means.
I believe you may get more accurate information by writing to the Priest of
the Parish of your family.
This is all assuming that you know the Catholic Parish your family is from!
But that's another lesson!!!!!!
I am teaching Irish Research next week at an LDS Family History Center. So
I've appreciated reading everyone's emails and learning about your
experiences. I hope my experience helps someone!
