Welcome to genealogy Peter! First time queries are always special!
There has been a family of RAHILL at Grange next to 'my' Callanans at
Ardbawn just north or Thurles since the 1820s (Tithe books). You will
find them there again in Griffith's Valuation. RAHILL occurs as witness
to some Callanan events but I have found no actual intermarriage. Some
Rahills are buried in the graveyard at Killinane.
Before that there is a John Rahill, a tenant on the Thurles Estate (that
included Grange) in 1744 - he paid an annual rent of £8.10.3.
Offlist I will send you details of a researcher Jeff Rahill in Hawaii
who is researching this family.

Well, folks,
I'm finally going to ask my first genealogy question !!! (Of course,
it's
not for me <gr>). I'll try to short-circuit the background, but it
involves a
letter I wrote to someone who was looking for a Rayhill near Burncourt.
I
suggested Rehill. Then someone saw my letter (apparently, it was on the
GENIRE
list) and wondered if there is a connection between Rehill and Rayhill.
I found
out the Irish name and meaning for Rehill, but I don't have any Irish
family
or surname books - such as Lysaght (sp.?) - to find if this is an
alternative
spelling for that family name.
Anyway, here is the information I was given:
>>> Yes, I would greatly appreciate your forwarding of my query. My
anscestor's
name was Matthew Rayhill. He was born circa 1760 somewhere in Ireland
and
was allegedly conscripted by the Royal Army to serve in the American
Revolution under General John Burgoyne's command.
Allegedly, when the British retreated the colonies by ship, they left
him
behind. Apparently, he signed an oath of allegience to America and
later
received a land grantaround Greenbrier County, VA (now WV)...only in
America! His wife was Esther Stull and he died around 1820.
Any information would be appreciated. <<<
