Doing a search for "hatters and mercury poisoning", and see the link ot
something of a chap called Goldwater. Apparently mercury poisoning in the
American felt-hat industry was first described in 1860 and the use of Mercury
in hat-making only forbidden by law in 1941, because of its neurotoxicity
(poisonous effect on nerve tissue and brain)
If this seems irrelevant to family history please forgive. But let's think
again ... is it? Never know what we may have inherited or from whom - by
nature or nurture!
Cheers from Eleanor (the one in Sydney NSW)
