Hi Corkers,
Need some help here. I'm trying to find information on a William John
GABRIEL who according to his Statement of Service in the Canadian Armed
Forces gave his date and place of birth as April 1872, County of Cork,
Ireland. According to other documents I have his parents were Thomas
GABRIEL and Annie WILLIAMS. Three previous searches of the birth
records at the Custom House in Dublin from the years 1866 to 1880 were
unsuccessful. Sometime later he left Ieland for Canada. His service
record shows that he enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force on 3
July, 1916 at Bancroft, Ontario and was honourably discharged on 26
September, 1916 at Barriefield, Ontario. He later married my aunt Mary
BRINDLEY from England on December 24, 1918 at Bancroft. We know his was
Anglican or Church of Ireland (CI) so that would mean he would have
lived in a Protestant parish somewhere in Cork. A query to the Mallow
Parish Centre back in 1996 also came up empty. In their reply they said
they don't hold the records for the Bandon area. I understand in and
around the town of Bandon there are a number of GABRIELs and also in
Cork City. In 1980 William's son hired a researcher (very expensive) to
find out more about the family. She came up with the birth dates and
place for two children who were born to a Thomas and Anne GABRIEL in the
parish of Kilbrogan in the north part of Bandon. However there is no
record for William. She thinks they may have moved possibly to
Ballymodan in the south part of Bandon. She believes this is the
family. Is there any way to check the parish records in Ballymodan?
Your help is needed on this one.
