On by grandfather's birth certificate,
Charles GROGAN b. 30 Oct 1880, Cork, Co. Cork
f. John GROGAN m. Ellen HARTNETT
address Francis St. Cork, Co. Cork
there is 'Lying in Hospital' in the area for Place of Birth and in the
signature, Qualification and Residence of Informant which is M A Grant,
Chief Resident Officer.
Charles was the first born child.

The following is from the London Mailing List:
"Lying in hospitals began as charities in the 18th C. They proliferated
during the 19th C as teaching and proselytising institutions. These
hospitals were principally intended for the "wives of poor industrious
Tradesmen or distressed House-keepers" and the wives of soldiers and
sailors. The ladies' committees and clergymen sponsoring lying in hospitals
were zealous that the care provided should not only be charitable but be
seen to be. Nearly all lying in hospitals excluded single mothers. Most
excluded married women pregnant for the first time because there was a
danger they had been impure before a hasty marriage. Women with no child
living or a child deformed or diseased were also excluded. The large
teaching hospitals did not usually admit women for childbirth before the
late 19th century, though their medical students and staff delivered women
in their own homes."

Would anyone know any details of such a hosptial in the city of Cork.

TIA,

Margaret
