I'm at a standstill in the effort to trace my great-grandfather back to
Ireland. I have his exact birthdate but only County Cork as a birthplace; no
parents or townland. I have written twice to the state for his death
certificate and so far they don't seem to be able to find it. The County
Genealogical Society where he died has an abbreviated death record for him but
no critical info. They also indicated that his naturalization application
record is probably not available at the District Court level there because
several of those records are missing for the years surrounding his
application.

I have his actual naturalization certificate but it only gives the date, court
and judge as any specific information, no other personal data. I know the
year he emigrated from Ireland to Ontario, Canada and the year he emigrated to
the U.S. but I have no idea what sources (if any) I could check to find out
where he came from in Ireland. I've been told that few ships lists exist for
the year 1847 and even then, it may not have the town or parish on the record
anyway.

Does anyone have any idea what other sources may exist or if there's any
chance at all that I could check with sources in Cork and get anywhere? His
name was John O'Connor and he's shown in the 1871 Ontario census as John
Connors so I don't have much of a chance with such a common name. Any ideas
greatly appreciated.
