Hello--I always thought the term derived from the eventual influence on some
of the Irish population by the survivors of the Spanish Armada who washed up
on those shores after their ships were wrecked off that coast (circa 1586?).
Some of the Spanish sailors were killed by the Irish, but others were taken
in and married local girls, never returning to Spain.
