When in Cork City I was told by a historian that from the time of the
troubles' the Catholic people avoided giving out any personal information
for fear of recriminations. This was why a child would be christened by a
name that was never used -- knick names were the vogue. Certainly they
would avoid census, perhaps not wanting to lose their land??
To this day my husband (born 1920) and his family are very secretative about
personal information. Anyone else notice this trend?
Best regards all,
