>Moira- Thanks for response- I contacted and sent money to the "RCB
Library" early this year- and had some very helpful information sent to me
in New Zealand, for which I was very grateful- it confirmed some family
notes from members of the previous two generations in the family- I am now
trying to make the links- presume requesting a birth certificate for my
great-grandmother would be the next step- I estimate she would be born
around 1838, in County Cork, as a copy of her marriage entry in Melbourne,
Aust is all I have to work from. Can anyone help with suggestions as to
where I would apply for a birth certificate with only that much
information? Many thanks. Joan Cook, from sunny Whangarei, in the
winterless north of New Zealand.

Birth registration does not begin that early.
You need her location in Co. Cork. None of us can do that
much without out point of origin.

Then you would look to see if her religion's church records
survive for that parish and time period and search the
records for a baptism.

After 16 years of searching I did find my xgreat grandmother's
baptism in 1831 by
1) identifying someone else in the family who was still alive in
1901 and remained in Ireland; this is called whole family
genealogy--doing research on every side relative in
each generation even though you think you are not interested
in those people.
2) finding that sister on the census with enough clues to narrow
place of birth to Cork city.
3) having C of I church records searched (for a fee) in Cork
city and finding hers had survived the 1922 fire.

Lot of work for the date. Worth it? YES!
