Kia Ora to all on the List from Joan Cook (NZ),
In the round-robin from extended-family-distantly connected members, including Ireland and Cornwall, have come across details of a THOMAS CORKER, who (apparently??) was an agent/trader for the Royal African Company 1699-1700, in what is now the Sierra Leone area. Not sure if he married (in European terms), but was linked to an African women of the Ya Kumba family, and the name was changed to Caulker- On the web sites, his descendents of the past, are listed as local chiefs of areas.
Any advise on how to follow this through, in a way which would be appropriate and senstive to the issues, as he does appear to come from the Dublin/Cornwall line of CORKER. Am slowly building up a picture of the family tree, presume the next stage is to somehow endeavour to "prove" the information? Is that the way to go about it? I have so appreciated the help and learnings from this list, and the Cork/Ireland List contributions, even though there hasn't been much coming through from Corwnall of late, and I have not had much to offer others, from a genealogy perspective, but wonder if there is a list discussing the impact from "colonization" viewpoint etc. as my forbears certainly spread their genes far and wide. My own work in Aotearoa/New Zealand over many years has been on "patterns of coloniization"- e.g. the "Acts" on "treason and rebelltion" in Ireland, were used as patterns for "Acts" passed in this country - enough said.
Thanks for any advice.
