August 5-10, 1998

Hi all -

I've spent a lot more time correcting broken links over the last
few days. There are two wonderful things that result of me doing
this:
1) You are assured that the links on my list are reliable and that
the list will always be a useful tool for your online research.
2) I always end up adding several new links in the process. As I'm
searching for a new address to fix a broken link, I inevitably find
all-new resources, so I take the time to set up new links while I'm
able to verify the address, the title and the content of the site.

In my ongoing project to complete a broken link check on each of my
category pages, I accomplished quite a bit this week. I found
several new web sites for Nebraska societies and Minnesota
societies. I also finished updating each page in my Societies &
Groups category (some links cross-referenced on the various state,
province or country pages). I removed 19 links, added 54 new links
and corrected 90 broken links. I completely updated my Software &
Computers page, adding 1 new link, removing 7 links and correcting
9 links. Other categories I finished updating: Railroads, Religion,
Roots-L, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, Taxes, Terms, several US
state pages, the Channel Islands and Wales. My focus now is on the
Libraries category.

~==~ THANK YOU FOR THE OFFERS TO HELP! ~==~

On numerous occasions, many of you have generously offered to help
me with the daily work to keep up the site. I appreciate your
thoughtfulness more than you can know! I have been thinking about
it and trying to come up with ways that visitors to the site can
help me that would be easy, self-explanatory and wouldn't require
extra input from me. There are a couple of things that I do
regularly, which anyone can do. For those of you who would like to
help, here are the ideas:
1. Send e-mail to other webmasters asking them to update
their links with the new address to Cyndi's List. Whenever you
run
across a web site that has a link to one of the pages on
Cyndi's List, check the address and if they haven't changed
the link to point to the new domain (http://www.CyndisList.com),
please send a quick e-mail to the webmaster of that site and
ask them to update the link. Be sure to tell them what page
you found the link on and what the new address should be.
2. I'm very dedicated to keeping all links as current as possible.
I spend a lot of time correcting broken links. Please report
any
broken links you find on my web site via the Broken Link forms
found via links at the top and bottom of each page on the site.
3. If you have a web site of your own, please consider setting up
a link to my site. Please see:
Create a Link to Cyndi's List
http://www.CyndisList.com/linkto.htm
4. If you subscribe to other mailing lists, please consider sending
out periodic messages telling everyone about Cyndi's List. It is
here for all of you to use as your jumping-off point each day in
your online research. It is free for everyone to use and always
will be as long as my name is on it. So please share details
about the site with all of your online friends.

ABOUT UPDATES TO THE SITE:

I have thousands of requests for links backed up in my
mailbox right now. I'm working through 100-200 messages
each day. I promise I will get to everyone as soon as
humanly possible. In the meantime, my priorities are to
correct broken links first, followed by improvements to the
list and additions of new links. Please do NOT send me
repetitive requests for links to your web site. This only delays
things longer because it keeps me sorting through the daily
e-mail instead of working on the links.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
THE "NUMBERS":
~~I add approx. 1,000 new links per month.
~~I correct approx. 500 broken links per month.
~~There are almost 6,000 subscribers to this mailing list.
~~There are over 37,000 visitors to the web site each day.
~~I receive over 200 e-mail messages each day.
~~There really is only ONE of me!
RECENT IMPROVEMENTS:
1. A new FAQ page to answer many of the repetitive
questions and cut down on my incoming e-mail:
http://www.CyndisList.com/faq.htm
2. This mailing list, also in the hope of cutting down on
incoming e-mail by keeping everyone posted on what I'm
up to each day.
http://www.CyndisList.com/maillist.htm
3. An easier to navigate table of links at the bottom of each
page. These links to are to other pages in my web site
that relate to the day-to-day operations of Cyndi's List.
4. The addition of the NetMind / URL-Minder form at the bottom
of each page. This is a free service that will notify you by
e-mail that changes were made to a web page of your choice.
5. A new, non-intrusive javascript menu was added at the bottom
of each US state, Canadian province, UK and Scandinavian
page. This is a drop-down menu that will allow your javascript-
capable browser to jump to another web page within that
category without having to return to the main index.
6. New, highly optimized graphics on the site that aid in a quicker
load time in your web browser.
7. A new, very fast web server at RootsWeb to host the site.
8. A new, easy to remember address:
http://www.CyndisList.com
9. A helpful new page to answer many of the questions I receive
by e-mail regarding technical issues on the Internet:
Internet Stuff You Need To Know
http://www.CyndisList.com/internet.htm
10. Added new forms for submitting new links and for reporting
broken links on each page.
11. Added a new page "About Sending E-mail to Cyndi" with
some helpful guidelines:
http://www.CyndisList.com/e-mail.htm
Successful surfing!
