August 13 - Sept. 6, 1998
Hi all -
Over the last 3.5 weeks I have worked just about non-stop on the
project to correct broken links on my site. I did take a bit of a
break in the middle to attend the FGS (Federal of Genealogical
Societies) conference in Cincinnati, August 19-22. The conference
was wonderful and I made many terrific new friends. I'm pleased to
count among my newest friends, the fun group of people in charge of
the conference from the Ohio Genealogical Society. They all worked
hard and made the conference unforgettable for many people,
I'm pleased to say that I'm almost finished with the broken link
project. With the help of a friend and those of you who report
broken links to me via the form on my site, I have methodically
gone through every page on my site. I checked each of the links for
accuracy, corrected links, removed links and added new links along
the way. I only have the Canadian province pages and a few US state
pages left to check. Before beginning this project the rate of
broken links on my site ran between 4% and 9%. When I finish, I'll
run a new check on the site and report the new figure to you. In
the last two months I have corrected 4,209 broken links, I have
removed 655 links to sites for which I couldn't locate a new
address, and I added 2,052 new links.
The majority of the updates were in the following categories: How
To, Libraries, Personal Home Pages, Societies, Surnames,
California, Indiana, Tennessee.
Last week, after four straight days of working on links and making
myself bleary-eyed, I took a break and had a bit of fun adding to
the "Prisons, Prisoners & Outlaws" category page. I added three new
sub-sections: Historic Prisons & Penitentiaries, Notorious
Characters, Pirates, Privateers & Buccaneers.
And in my spare time <G>, I'm also working on two new books, my
genealogy society's web pages and monthly meetings, and two new
scripts to improve the web site, with the help of the folks at
Sierra. Since I haven't taken a day off for over a month now, I'm
going to take a few days away from this computer. I'll be back at
it full time on Friday.

ABOUT UPDATES TO THE SITE:
I have thousands of requests for links backed up in my
mailbox right now. I'm working through 100-200 messages
each day. I promise I will get to everyone as soon as
humanly possible. In the meantime, my priorities are to
correct broken links first, followed by improvements to the
list and additions of new links. Please do NOT send me
repetitive requests for links to your web site. This only delays
things longer because it keeps me sorting through the daily
e-mail instead of working on the links.
~~I add approx. 1,000 new links per month.
~~I correct approx. 500 broken links per month.
~~There are almost 6,000 subscribers to this mailing list.
~~There are over 37,000 visitors to the web site each day.
~~I receive over 200 e-mail messages each day.
