URL: http://www.waterloocountryinn.com
TITLE: Waterloo Country Inn
DESCRIPTION: Waterloo was built as a private residence around 1750 by a
prominent Somerset County landowner, Henry WAGGAMAN. The mansion was one of
the focal points of life on the Eastern Shore. In the nineteenth century
the property was owned by several prominent local families, including the
TEACKLES, RIGGINS, HANDYS and WAINWRIGHTS, until 1864,when the Somerset
County purchased this two story, Georgian style house for an almshouse. The
County retained ownership of the MonieCreek property until 1948, when
Waterloo once again became the property of a private owner.During the
period from Henry Waggamans initial purchase in 1741 until his death in
1760, he bought and sold numerous properties incentral Somerset County. In
1751 Henry Waggaman had his plantation consolidated under a resurvey known
as "WAGGAMAN'S PURCHASE". Waggamen died in 1760 and left his estate to his
eldest son, John Elliot Waggaman. But one year later after his father's
death, John diedat the age of 16. W!
aggaman's wife, Mary, evidently remained on the property until her death in
1780. Her sons Henry and George were theonly ones mentioned in her will.Due
to the fact that Henry Waggaman lived outside Somerset, he sold his
interests in his father's estate to his brother George in April 1793.George
Waggaman died intestate in the following year and because none of his heirs
lived in Somerset County, the family decided to sellthe plantation. New
ownership at this time of the property were the Riggins, another Somerset
County family.Restoration began in 1995 to the mansion and since 1996 the
Waterloo has been an elegant Country Inn owned by Theresa & Erwin KRAEMER
from Switzerland.
