TITLE : WorldVitalRecords.com - Bulimba Cemetery Monumental Inscriptions
DESCRIPTION : Bulimba Cemetery, also known as Balmoral or Morningside Cemetery, is located at the junction of Wynnum and Bennetts Roads in Morningside, a suburb of Brisbane. Though it officially opened in 1875, the first burial was in 1874 of George Wilson Pointon, a six year old boy who drowned in Norman Creek on 20th June that year. In the following years, many people from different nationalities and walks of life have been laid to rest in the grounds. Time and vandalism have taken their toll and remain a constant threat to the history recorded on the headstones. In an effort to preserve this history, members of the Queensland Family History Society first recorded the inscriptions at Bulimba Cemetery in the early 1980s. An update of the transcript was done late in 1993 to record any additional inscriptions and to note those headstones which had been subject to vandalism.

DESCRIPTION : This publication was compiled by Joan Ainsworth in 1981 and covers a wide range of records relating to Australians, Germans, Pacific Islanders and other expatriates in Papua New Guinea. The material is presented in five parts: Cemetery Records: Monumental inscriptions for 15 cemeteries: the old Port Moresby Cemetery Register 1912-1969: and transcriptions of memorials from six churches and war memorials. Miscellaneous Records: Change of name: Civil officials and prisoners of war deported to Australia 1914-1915: firearm permits 1891-1895: naturalisations 1947-1956. Probate Notices 1888-1975: From five different government gazettes: includes Notice to Creditors and Orders to Administer Estates by Curator of Intestate Estates. Transcriptions of BDM: Transcriptions of the birth, death and marriage notices from seven newspapers. Alphabetical Index: A complete alphabetical index to the four earlier parts. The full index covers approximately 15,000 people, with multi!
ple sources for many, and the full file represents over 600 pages of indexes and other information. This material is a unique and extremely valuable resource for research on expatriate families in Papua New Guinea. It covers a total of 38 sources from across the country, with some information such as the monumental inscriptions no longer available as time and vandalism have taken their toll on headstones. With very few Papua New Guinea records available, this publication is an essential resource for researchers with Papua New Guinea interests.

After the Paddington Cemeteries Act of 1911 several remains and memorials were also removed from Paddington Cemetery (Lang Park) to Toowong Cemetery. Though all plots had been sold by 1975 regular burials still take place in family plots and a columbarium has been established. The transcription of Toowong Cemetery Monumental Inscriptions was a Bicentennial Project of the Queensland Family History Society. Transcription was done by members of the Society between 1983 and 1987 and the transcriptions published in 1988.
