Hi Leona,

I'll gladly take a walk through the cemetary, however, there's almost 4 feet
of snow on the ground. Do you have any idea which cemetary in Pickering?
There are a few old ones around, but I'll also warn you there were many that
were built on. Pickering has absolutely exploded with development over the
past couple of years with massive subdivisions and huge supermalls. In
Canada, the law says a grave can't be disturbed for 100 years, but after
that time is up there's no protection, and these builders have little
respect for antiquities. I'll see what I can find out, and hopefully we'll
have a warm spell to melt some of the snow.

I'm not surprised you can't find your ancestors on the ship's passenger
lists, because here in Ontario they aren't indexed. I was looking for my
ancestors who came from England, and it's a nightmare. On the bright side
though, the time you mention, mid to late 1800's, Pickering was a very small
farming community, with very few residents. It's a 30 minute drive to
downtown Toronto, but much longer I suspect, by horse and buggy.

Please keep in touch, and we'll see what we can find.

Cheers,
Aimee
