Subject: [DANIEL-L] Chesley's quitclaim to Edwards
Date: Sat, 25 Jan 2003 22:22:38 -0800

Hi all,

I got to go to the library today for the first time in ages, oh happy
day, but it meant I was hopping all over the records, no way I was going
to obsess on and finish any one thing. Anyway, here's some stuff. I'm
going to send separate posts so they won't all get mixed with each other.

The following probably helps in the Chesley-quitclaim.

_Court Minutes of Granville County North Carolina 1746-1820_ by Zae
Hargett Gwynn

May court 1794
Chesley Daniel, Josiah Daniel, John Oliver appraise estate of Charles
Edwards, deceased.

Nov court 1798
CHARLES EDWARDS, deceased, late of Halifax County, Virginia (he died
1790), and on June 28, 1790 LETTY EDWARDS, widow of deceased and
executrix of estate of deceased, proved will in court and accordingly
entered into bond in that state with ROBERT WADE and others as
securities. LETTY EDWARDS later married LEONARD CHEATHAM, and ROBERT
WADE thereafter, as per law of the state, petitioned that LETTY and
LEONARD CHEATHAM deliver into his hands (ROBERT WADE) all and singular
estate of deceased and was delivered to him, who continues to have it in
possession. At the time of the death of CHARLES EDWARDS, he had a large
estate in Granville County consisting of horses, negroes, cattle, hogs,
etc. and since in his will he gave to LETTY, his wife, one-third of all
estate for her lifetime, residue to be divided to his 7 children,
namely: JAMES, MARYANN HAWKINS EDWARDS, LETTY EDWARDS, CHARLES EDWARDS,
JESSE EDWARDS, CLARKEY EDWARDS, L(EONARD) EDWARDS, and division to be
made when LEONARD EDWARDS (son) is 21 years old. The state left LETTY,
the wife, to be divided to children at her death also. LETTY CHEATHAM
sued in Halifax Court vrs. her husband for separate support from him.
All the children are minors. The court demanded that said LEONARD
CHEATHAM pay her 100 dollars per annum for support and made over to her
all her right in her deceased husband's (CHARLES EDWARDS) estate and
since LEONARD, the son of LETTY, is 21 since last April, ROBERT WADE
asks that the estate of CHARLES EDWARDS be sold and BARKLEY MARTIN as
guardian to EDWARDS children, also with MEMUCAN HUNT, attorney for LETTY
CHEATHAM, the division of the estate is to be made to all heirs. JAMES
EDWARDS objected but was overruled. Negroes not sold. Committee
appointed to investigate and make said division and report to court next
February 1799.

[No one was _really_ expecting anything to show up in the Feb 1799
records, right? Of course not.]

Nov court 1810
Josiah Daniel, William Lumpkin, and Chesley Daniel prove deed from Jesse
Edwards to Samuel W. Vanable for 900 acres in Halifax County, Virginia.

Feb term 1809 Leonard Edwards and others deed to James Edwards 900 acres
in Halifax county, Virginia.

Nov court 1815
Will of Charles Edwards, deceased, proved by Charles Crenshaw and Reuben
Voss and Peggy Edwards qualified as executrix. [So this probably isn't
the son Charles named above, as he shows up in the next record?]

Aug term 1818, Monday Aug 5, 1818
Power of attorney from Charles Edwards, Jesse Edwards, Letty Nichols,
Julius Nichols, husband of Letty, legatees of Charles Edwards, all of
Spartanburg district, South Carolina, directed to James Edwards and
power of attorney proved in Edgefield District, South Carolina from
Leonard Edwards, Mary Ann Hawkings Mims and her husband, Britton Mims,
Chasley Mims and her husband, Drury Mims, legatees of Charles Edwards,
made to James Edwards.

----
I had earlier found a marriage for a Charles Edwards and a Mary Daniel
in the Douglas Register of Goochland on 9 Jun 1767, was all happy
thinking she might be James Daniel and Jennie Hicks daughter who hopped
over to marry, but then there's a recorded Halifax marriage for 30 Apr
1779 for Charles Edwards and Letty Wade. I don't know enough about
these families to show how James and Leonard Edwards are nephews of
Chesley. There's still something weird with the kids' ages. If Leonard
is the youngest, named last in the court record, everything to wait
until he comes of age (a reasonable assumption, but not necessarily a
sure thing), then he should/would be the only one born to Letty Wade
Edwards. Could the others belong to Mary Daniel (working back from 1778
on the other children in James' will lands you square at 1767/8)? But
then Chesley names one of each of the two women's sons as his nephews.
Not impossible, but again, I don't really know who the Mary Daniel of
the Edwards marriage is, so it's all just playtime.

-----
I think the Richard Hicks of King and Queen County, in the right time
frame for early Jane Hicks (md. James Daniel), will turn out to be her
family, but I couldn't pin anything down with some quick looking today,
my library is great on Virginia, save King and Queen. But my gut
reaction to what I was seeing tells me it's the family. There's no
Hicks besides Jennie in the Middlesex records, she must have hopped the
county line.

-----
Barring any whatever, I'll hit Salt Lake in Feb, will get the original quitclaim.

Regards,
Pam in CA

P.S. I like Chesley well enough, working on this family is just plain
fun research. I pout heartily that it's not mine, and I also realize I
don't know, does _anyone_ on the list actually descend from Chesley,
James and Jane, James and Anne, or James and Elizabeth? And will I ever
squeeze out _my_ James?
