Until middle 1800 children got their fathers first name as surname. So
the daughter of Hans is called Hansdatter (Hansdaughter) - and his son
Hansen (Hanssøn= Hansson really - but this is transformed to Hansen). In
the church books only the given name was written.

And I think, that some of your family came from the city Vonsild in
Jutland.

I found him in a Danish database:

As always searching for my Danish Roots with the names in the subject..
as well as several others.

Wonder if someone can tell me why it is that a child doesn't take their
father's surname? Quite confusing!

My relatives were primarily located in Hjerting Parish, Rodding Denmark,

and Vejby, Frederiksborg, Denmark

My GG grandfather Jens Wonsild/ Wonsyld came to America in 1880 and
settled in N. Dakota and Minnesota. He was a blacksmith.

His sisters also came to Minnesota where they married and settled. HE
seems to be the only one that changed his name from Wonsild to Wonsyld
upon comming to America. He is listed as Vonsild on his immigration
info.



my GG grandmother Jorgine Kirstine Jorgensen came to Minn in 1890 with
her brother.
