Hi Elsie,
My Skovby's are from Falster Island. Maribo Amt. I have even managed
to finding living Skovby's that are related to me. I would like to find
someone else that is doing the reseach of this name. I have found that
they used both the patronymic system and the Skovby surname back many
generations. My great grandfather when he came to the States dropped
Skovby from his name and was just Frederik Rasmussen. It has been a very
interesting journey. I think the roll call is a great idea.

Star - In the Index in my "Genealogical Guidebook and Atlas of Denmark" by
Frank Smith and Finn A Thomsen, there are 11 towns/villages with this
name,
and 7 with Skovby and another name, such as Skovby, Andkær.
WIth so many names, they must be towns/villages with the same name
in
various counties or sections of the country of Denmark.
The word "skov" has a definition of forest, large areas where covered
with forest, in my "Gyldendals Røde Ordbøger", Dansk-Engelsk.
Other than these explanations I don't know in what context you find
this
word. Maybe somebody else has a reply. Do you have any other information
giving clues to Skovby?
I have not taken the time to look up all of these Skovbys to see just
where each is located on my map pages.
Somebody mentioned "surnames". Having been involved with Danish
and
Swedish research, it is my understanding that the word "surname" is not
used, but rather the names were on the patronymics system.
Example: My father's names is Erik Jensen, and his father's name is
Jens
Petersen. My dad took his father's first name and added sen onto it,
Jensen. In this system, the father's last name is not carried on into the
next generationm such as surnames, which are carried from generation to
another by the male person. You can see then, that the last names
changed
with every generation depending on what the father's first name was.
