Subject: [DeCamp] DeCamp brick walls - #5: David DeCamp of VA
Date: Tue, 1 Jan 2002 20:06:41 EST
This is one of several postings that I will make about the "brick walls" that
I have run into. These are DeCamp families that I have been unable to
connect to the known descent from Laurens Jansen DeCamp.
David DeCamp was born about 1795, and married Sally Ford in Giles Co., VA, in
1815. Further descent through four generations is known for two of their
three children.
This isolated DeCamp line is of special interest, since it appears to
represent the first known migration of a DeCamp to the West by a route south
of the Ohio River. Giles Co., VA, is located in southwestern Virginia, near
Bluefield, WV. There is one mention in a Giles Co. history that suggests
they were Melungeons, a people of uncertain origin -- possibly Portugese --
who frequently intermarried with native Americans. However, neither DeCamp
nor Ford are names found among the Melungeons.
