Well of course! The Warrant was the operating
mechanism by which the Warrant Survey was made. Many
of the original Warrants for the Headrights Land
Grants survive in the collections of the Georgia
Department of Archives and History. And this was what
I thought you were referring to. (another "senior
moment" on my part.)
The possible reference to soil type in the term
"Mullatto" is also intriguing. After posting mine of
last, THE WIFE (who is always more than happy to chase
down riddles involving etymology) found the same
reference in her 1930 edition of the OED. It will be
interesting to discover if the traditions of how White
Plains got it's name is reflected in the Headrights
Plats of the area.
