These patents were given only in connection with Military service, one
reason I understand was to encourage settlement of hardened veterans in
tough frontier areas (the Northwest in particular) to act as a sort of
buffer between the "not so friendly" natives. I believe they were
awarded before 1812 however prior to that the recipients were only able
to select land in Illinois, Arkansas, and Missouri. After that, I think
all states were open. That's about all I know about them. Maybe that
will help you in another direction. I appreciate your response and any
further help. My hope is to find out if there are any patents on a 17+
tax lot, 1100 acre site of ours. Thanks again.

Karen

Interesting thoughts regarding this subject. I have no answer, but here
in
NC it appears that it was often used when commissioners were appointed
by
the court to settle an estate and transfer real estate of a person who
died
without a valid Will. Thus, it was a Commissioners' Deed. Am I out in
left
field somewhere? Thanks.
