Hi Lee -

Thank you so much for your thoughts on this. The property conveyed in
these deeds is large - the smallest is 12,500 acres and the largest is
24,000 acres. And the original tract covers lots in both township 39
(Hamilton County) and township 42 (Herkimer County). The area is still
wilderness and the deed descriptions reference lot numbers. Only in the
case of two of those lots do I have a metes and bounds description for a
railroad right of way. The county has only tax maps with lot numbers,
and using those would require knitting six large maps together. I have
a photocopy of a plat map made in 1929 which shows everything I need,
and this was done in connection with a survey but the plat is not a part
of the deed record itself. The photocopy of this plat has been reduced a
number of times and is no longer legible. Both townships were part of
the Totten & Crossfield purchase. The original tract was purchased in
1851 from the state of New York and is where our family has spent our
summers ever since - so the record has emotional value! Grin.
