Paul,
One thing you didn't mention was getting the Topo map to the right scale,
which I found to be the first task. I have downloaded the Topo maps for Harford
County, Maryland (but not from TopoZone), put them all together, and use it for
one of the background images to position things on creeks and rivers and the
bank of the Chesapeake Bay.
I found that I had to set the options to 3939 feet/inch and 300 dots/inch. I
believe it should have been exactly 2000 ft/inch and 150 dots/inch, but that
didn't seem to match DeedMapper's calculation of lengths. This is a 1.525%
error.
I don't know what scale the maps are that you downloaded, but I presume they
would be based on something like 150 or 200 dots/inch.
When I use the county's tax maps as a background, I have to set the scale to
10000 ft/inch and 2021 dots/inch to get really close. Once again, I would
suspect that it should be exactly a 10 to 2 ratio. This is a 1.05% error.
I can't imagine that DeedMapper has this error in it's calculation of
lengths.
For the orientation, I simply choose to use the orientation of the Topo map
as my base reference for declination, and rotate everything else to match it.
For position, the easiest is to position the map according to where you
already have the 800 deeds positioned. Or else, if you haven't locked all the
deeds' positions, you can select all of them (in Table view, hold down Control and
click on each one) then switch to plot view and move all the selected ones at
the same time.
(In the new version, you'll be able to click on the first one, then hold down
the Shift and click on the last to select them all.) (Note to Steve: In build
8, this has a long delay for 1000+ deeds.)
