I've been using the free scanned topo maps at libremap.org quite successfully. They are
well suited as DeedMapper backgrounds when the research area is on a single
map and the rotation issue is either not significant or is corrected for by using the
Decl keyword in your deeds. The file size (around 10MB) is not an issue in terms of
usability.
I took a quick look at mytopo.com and msrmaps.com. It looks like both would be
excellent sources of custom printed maps (hard copies) that are oriented to true
north and the prices look to be reasonable for the service provided. I didn't see
anything about getting bitmaps, so if I overlooked that, please let me know.
trails.com is a website that allows downloads of images but you must be a member to
do this. I didn't examine this site very deeply.
The point of this thread is about getting background images for use with the program
and was prompted by a request to stitch two scanned topo quad images together.
Is anyone aware of a site that will create custom topo map images? I seem to recall
that some users had found sites that would do this.
