Subject: [DEFORD-L] Thomas Deford pension record
Date: Tue, 17 Aug 1999 02:27:22 EDT
Hi listers,
I thought I would share this pension record with you as it may help someone.
Some of the words are blank as I can not make them out. Also note, the Eli
Gilpin who signs for Thomas DeFord is married to a Rebecca Deford.
My Joseph Deford b. c. 1784 VA and d. 1860 IL. may be the son or grandson
of this Thomas Deford. I would like to hear from anyone who may have
information on this family.

The State of Ohio
Delaware County .ss. Be it remembered that on the
nineteenth - day of November in the year eighteen
hundred and thirty two, personally appeared in open court
before the judges of the court of Common Pleis in and
for that said county of Delaware, now in session, Thomas De Ford
a resident of Troy Township in the said county
of Delware and State of Ohio, age ninety six years
who being first duly sworn accoding to law doth on
his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the
benefit of the Act of Congress passed June 7 1832.
I the said Thomas De Ford on my said oath say that I entered
the service of the United States and served therein under the
following named officers and under the following cir-
cumstanses to wit. - I was born on the eastern shore of Maryland,
on the 9th day of December about the year 1736. I have no record
of my age that from the best informtaion
I have received from my parents & others I am very confident
I am now 96 or 97 years old. At the commencment of
the revolutinary war I lived near Taneytown, Frederick
County, Maryland. A short time before the affair at Trenton
about in the fore past of December I was drafted and called out
unto the service. I joined my company, where they musted at
Taneytown, under the command of Capt. Abraham Hiter. Marched
throught Peter = Littles town, McAllister's town, York,
Lancaster, and then in to Philadelphia where we remained
four or five days. We then marched to form Washington's
army in New Jersey and on our way to Boston where we
crossed the Delaware river, we met the prisoners taken at
Trenton. I was during this time under the command of the
followining officers - Brigadier Genl. Hance, Johnson, 1st Col
Morman
Bruce, 1st Col. ___ Blair. I was with Genl. Cerlington's
army in New Jersey all winter. I do not recollect all
the places we were at, but towards the last of March I
was discharge with my company at a place called Baskins Ridge in
New Jersey. We were inform by our officers that we might return
to our homes, but received no written disc-
charge. We were then discharge d. Paid 5 schillings or 2/3 of a
dollar in continental money to go home upon, which
was worth nothing. I served this time about four months.
In July or August of this same year (1777) I was called out into
the service again. Joining my company in the vicinity of Taney-
town under the command of Capt. William Pepple. Marched to
some place in Pennsva. where we joined a body of troops
under the command of Genl Smallwood; being about 2500
in number mostly militia in some few regulers my Regt. was
under the command of Col, Baker Johnson. I was next marched with
this body of troops under Genl Smallwood? to a place
called Peola. Genl. Smallwood: has received orders from Genl.
Vayne to meet him near Peola when we arrived at Peola
it was in the night, and was there surprised and attacked
by a party of Brittish troops, who routed our troops before we
joined Wagner. There a number of our troops were killed,
and we were thrown into the utmost consfusion in the darkness
of the night. On the next day Genl.Smallwood rallied his troops
at a place called the Red = Lion. Some days after that I was
marched with the troops under Genl. Smallwood to Germantown
we were marched all night, and at day break the battle was
commenced by Genls. Wayne and Morgan who were in our
front at a place calleed, I think, the Chesnut Ridges in the
vicinity of Germantown. Genl. Smallwood's division was during
the battle on the left wing of the American army,
and we ---- the Delaware River then the main body.
We took Germantown and drove and the British towards Phil-
adelphia. The enemy then rallied and came against us from
Philadelphia _ attacked us and we were compelled to retreat.
about 11 o'clock A.M. After these events Genl. Smallwood's
division were marched to a place called Parksomi. I
recalled also of being with General Wahington's army at Valley
Forge. At one or the others of these places I was discharged on
the last of November of the first of December
and in 5 or 6 days returned to my home. During these two
tours I rendered my country seven or eight months services. I
never received any written discharge, and have never
received any pay for my sevices, except 5 shilling in continent-
al money each time I was discharged. I have no document-
ary evidence, and know of no person ----- testimony I can
procure who can testify to my sevices. About 22 or 23 years
since I left the state of Maryland and came to the state
of Ohio and have since resided in the county of Pickaway
and Delaware County. I came into Delaware County
about 8 years since where I now reside. I have some time since
resided in Pickaway County
on a visit to my friends there.
I hereby relinquish every claim whatever to any pension or
annuity except the present and declare that my name is not
on the pension roll of the agency of any states
Sworn & Subscribed to the day and year aforesaid.
