DEATH OF NOBLE T. JERMAN
Noble T. Jerman, one of our oldest and best known citizens died on Sunday
afternoon, from something like congestion of the lungs, in the 86th year
of his age. He had taken a severe cold some ten days previous but had not
been confined to his bed a week. Weakness incident to old age as well as
a naturally delicate constitution made him a ready victim for disease to
prey upon, requiring on his part the greatest caution in caring for his
health which doubtless was the means of prolonging his life beyond the
age of four-score. He retained his facilities until the last, talked with
his pastor and members of the family not a half hour before he expired,
and sank into the arms of death, painlessly and without a struggle, as
if falling into a sleep.

He was a native of Sussex county, born Oct. 14th, 1803,in the vicinity
of Dagsborough. He was one of a family of eleven children, one of whom died
in early manhood, three brothers and two sisters married and went to live
in the West, and three sisters married and died near their old home in
Sussex county. But one of his family was known to the people of this section,
the late Rev. Matthias Jerman who spent his early life in the ministry,
mostly in New Jersey, returning to this State and dying 14 years ago. Noble
T. Jerman married Eliza, daughter of Thomas and Mary Metcalf, in 1831.

In his early manhood he went to Millsborough where he engaged in merchandising
and was sucessful to an unusual degree. Because of failing health in 1847
he bought a farm near this place and moved to it, remaining however only
two years when he moved to town and in a year bought the property which
was his home until the day of his death.

He united with the Methodist church on coming into this vicinity and had
thus been a member of it continuously for over forty-one years and was
its oldest member. He was a steady attendant and contributor, and with
his wife, unless prevented by absolute sickness (though his hearing was
impared sufficiently to prevent a full enjoyment of what fell from the
sacred desk), could always be found in his accustomed place, an eager listener,
if not always catching what the preacher said. Thanksgiving day it was
noticed he was not in attendance on the services, which was the first knowledge
that the most of his fellow members had of his illness. Among the last
expressions was his readiness to meet death and the absence of fear in
meeting the dreaded enemy that confronts all mankind.

Mr. Jerman while in a general sence keeping up with the age, in a particular
sence never got away from the lessions of his youth of simplicity of faith
and practice, abstemiousness in life, economy in expenditures and early
and late seeing after the details of his business. He did not deligate
to others what he could do himself, he kept well in hand the essential
feature of his business which experience had taught he could manage better
for himself than others could for him. This was his distinguishing feature
and added to it was another that gave him a marked individuality - persistence
and perseverence, when there was an obscurity, until he had reached a satisfactory
solution.

He leaves besides his widow four children, Mrs. Mary E. Fieroe,John M.,
Joshua T., and Dr. Theodore Jerman, practicing medicine at Holmesburg,Pa.

He leaves what may be called for this section a large estate, from #75,000
to $100,000,invested mostly in farms and individual loans.

The funeral services are being held this afternoon in the M. E. Church
with sermon by Rev. Wm. S. Robinson followed by interment in Glenwood cemetery.
