Hi folks:
Taking a shot in the dark here because the lack of paper trails has been
making me nuts lately.
John GORBY (sometimes spelled GORBEY) was born in Brandywine Hundred
between 1780 and 1790 to Joseph GORBY and Hannah STILLEY. He appears as
a head of household om the 1810 census, with just him and his wife
enumerated. He then disappears until his Will is registered at New
Castle in September 1837.
The will was drawn up in July, 1837 and in it he names his wife
"Isabella" who is also executrix of his estate. Anybody have an
Isabella disappear during that time period?
The will was witnessed by Owens ZEBLEY and Thomas W ZEBLEY. Adam GRUBB
and John BARLOW appraised the estate at $258.85 in October 1837. He
must have been a farmer as his goods included 1 horse, 2 cows, 3 pigs,
wheat, oats, and hay in the sheaf, corn standing, apples and potatos.
Moneys paid by the probated estate include $12.75 to W ZEBLEY for making
the coffin. Other moneys paid to J W THOMPSON, A PRINCE, Richard G
HANBY, John DORENS, William T McKEE, Wm J BULLOCK, Samuel L GRUBB Smithy
and Wesley TALLEY.
Robert MORRISON collected the School Tax of $1.00 and George WELDON
collected the Road Tax of $.68.
With so many names listed, I'm hoping that I can maybe nail down where
in the Hundred he lived.
Thanks!
Graydon Gorby
