Hi Judy--
I wish I could see your document & give you a hand with the
old handwriting. From what you have quoted so far it sounds
like an administrator's bond. They bound themselves to the
Governor & would have to pay that bond if they didn't
administer the estate in an honest manner. Sometimes
friends would go bond with the Administrator. It appears
that the amount of bond has a relationship to the value of
the estate. That is what I think it might be without seeing
the whole thing.
In a deed it us usually called an Indenture made such & such
date between John Doe & his wife Mary of NewCastle Co., DE
of one part & George Jones of whatever Co., VA of the other
part....in consideration of the sum of 40 pounds current
money of DE (or might be pounds of tobo. which is tobacco
which was used as currency)...then into land description.
The Administrator's bond is not usually found in Will books
as it is not a Will. Sometimes it is in Deed books but
mostly in Court Minutes. In the Court Minutes should also
be the Inventory & Settlement. The Settlement might also
show additional relatives names but without relationships
stated.
Hope this helps a little.
I'd like to request a lookup in the books you listed, if you
would be so kind.
Surname: RUTH
Given names,
Samuel, James, Joseph, Alexander, George, Samuel Jr, John,
William, & Mary,
Samuel RUTH will is dated 28 Jan 1748 in NewCastle, names

I really need some land records to help prove that the son
Joseph is indeed my Joseph who later is in Greenbrier Co.,
VA c1780.
