The 6 degrees of separation is not through familial relationships, it's
through "aquaintance" relationships. That is, you know someone who knows
someone else who knows someone else who knows someone else who knows
someone else who knows that other person. The theory is that the chain
from you to that other person is no more than 6 in length. Some recent
conjectures say the gap may have narrowed to a smaller number.
