"Sognefoged" was a Parish Official (usually part time)
who performed a number of official duties in the parish --
various registrations, including 'Selective Service'
(military conscription), performing civil marriages, etc. etc.,
as well as being the local police (small town sheriff).
This position was abolished in 1974.

PS: I still have my Danish "Selective Service" registrations
from 1950, signed by our local "Sognefoged"!
(I also still have my US selective service card from 1964)

Hello friends:
Following much frustration with the handwriting, in a Bække Parish birth
record, I find the child's father, my GGrandfather, referred to as what
appears to be the word "Sognefoged." I trust that is correct, because two
other parish records refers to him, using the abbreviation, "Sognef. and
farmer." My Dansk dictionary defines Sognefoged as a Constable or Sheriff,
and another as a Parish Official.

My dictionary definition is hardly definitive. Perhaps someone can lend a
hand with the translation? Thank you,
