Subject: instructions (in English) for accessing images at arkivalieronline
Date: Wed, 15 Dec 2004 15:08:10 -0500
Hi,
My thanks to several people on the list who tested my instructions on
how to access the images at arkivalieronline recently. Here's the
first posting to the list...I'll update and repost them periodically.
Have fun,
Lisa

The Statens Arkiver is putting images of Danish censuses and church
books online for anyone to use, free. The URL for what's known as
arkivalieronline (AO) is <www.arkivalieronline.dk>. There are no
instructions in English at the web site, so use this guide to help you
gain access to the images. You must have
a) a browser that allows pop-up windows, at least while you're using
the site. Mozilla's Firefox allows you to disable its pop-up blocking
feature for web sites you specify. Also check to see if some of your
other applications, such as Norton Utilities, block pop-up windows, and
if so, disable them while you are at AO.
b) a tiff viewer, since the images are tiffs and a viewer will allow
you to view, enlarge/reduce and print. AO recommends getting a Tiff
plugin. See <http://www.arkivalieronline.dk/Plugin/default.aspx> for
links to 4 tiff plugins; you'll have to see which one can be used on
your operating system. I happen to have an application, not a plugin,
called Preview that views, enlarges, rotates, etc. tiffs and other
image types. After an AO image downloads to my desktop, Preview opens
it in another window, allowing me to look at the image in Preview while
I get the next image in my web browser.
c) a username and password. This is now required so AO can prevent
people from doing massive downloads (hundreds of files), which their
server can't handle. To get a password, go to
<http://www.arkivalieronline.dk/Login/Opretbruger.aspx>, select Oprette
to sign up for a password, wait for a new page. On the new page, type
in your first name (Fornavn), last name (Efternavn), mailing address,
just the number and street part (Adresse), zip code (Postnr.), city
(By), country (Land), your email address (E-mail) and hit Send. You
should receive an email response in Danish with your email address as
your user name and a password. Caution - some characters look alike,
e.g. lower case L looks like upper case I. Copy and paste the password
from the email into a word processor with large Ariel or Courier font
to see what the characters are, or always copy-and-paste your password
in. At this time, there is no way to change the password to something
easier to remember. If you forget your password, go back to
<http://www.arkivalieronline.dk/Login/Opretbruger.aspx>, select Glemt
password, wait for the page to refresh, enter your email address and
hit send. They will send your password to the email address your
provide.
Accessing the images
1. You can login on the main AO page
<http://www.arkivalieronline.dk/default.aspx>. Type or copy-and-paste
your email address and password in the upper right, and hit the Login
button. The page will refresh, and under the Logout button, there
should be a note "Logget på som your-email-address," meaning logged in
as you.
2. Now click on Søg i kirkebøger (church books) or Søg i
folketællinger (censuses) in the upper left.
3. When the page refreshes, click on Søg i kirkebøger (church books)
or Søg i folketællinger (censuses) again.
Kirkebøger (Church Books)
4. If you're looking at the kirkebøger, choose the Amt, Herred and
Sogn from the dropdown menus. The page will refresh after each
selection. You could also just go down the long list of Sogne (344
parishes as of 14 Dec 04) and pick the one you want.
5. Then a page with a table of sogn, herred, amt, tekst (links to
images), fra, til, and F K V D J T A appears. Fra and til are the date
ranges of the images, F=births, K=confirmations, V=marriages, D=deaths,
J=register/index, T=moving-in lists, A=moving-out lists. I suspect
these groups of images came from the same church book volume, but I'm
not sure. Click on the highlighted Tekst link for the date range and
record type you want.
6. When the page refreshes, a new dropdown menu will appear above the
table: Opslag 1, and below it in red, af XXX, where XXX is the number
of images in the group. To view an image, choose an Opslag from the
dropdown menu. Here you have to have the tiff plugin installed and the
pop-up blocker disabled. What happens now depends on your system. On
mine, a tiff downloads to my desktop and my tiff viewer opens it in a
different window. During the download to my desktop, a blank window
pops up, which I can close at any time. Images are usually 175-500K in
size and take about a minute to download through a 56K modem.
7. Since the Opslag dropdown menu does not indicate what dates and
record type are on the images, you will have to choose one, look to see
what's on it, choose another one from the dropdown menu, look at it,
and so on until you get what you want. Once you get near the date you
want, use the >> button to get the next image or << for the previous
image.
Folketællinger (Censuses)
8. If you want to look at the folketællinger, click Søg i
folketællinger in the left menu. On the new page, click it again.
9. From the dropdown menus, choose the year (vælg årgang, 1787, 1801,
1840, 1855 and 1860 available as of 14 Dec 04), choose the land
division (vælg stedbetegnelse). Etaten=civil service and includes
military companies, København=city of Copenhagen with the different
quarters, Købstad=incorporated city such as Odense and Fredericia,
Landsogn=parishes in the country. After choosing a land division, a
new pop-up menu will appear, so choose from that whatever it is you are
looking for. Then hit the Hent Oplysninger button.
10. When the page refreshes, a new dropdown menu will appear: Opslag
1, and below it in red, af XXX, where XXX is the number of images for
the location you chose. To view an image, choose an Opslag from the
dropdown menu. Here you have to have the tiff plugin installed and the
pop-up blocker disabled. On my system, a tiff downloads to my desktop
and my tiff viewer opens it in a different window. Your system may
vary. To find your family on the census, you will have to go through
the images one-by-one by going back to the Opslag dropdown menu page
and clicking on << or >> until you find what you're looking for.
If you've been looking at censuses and want to switch to church books,
just click on Søg i kirkebøger in the left menu, and vice-versa. Check
the site frequently, as images are posted sometimes 3 or 4 times a
month.
If you have further questions, post them to the Denmark mailing list,
and mention the computer, operating system and web browser you are
using when you describe the problem.
