I can't remember if I noted, at the time, that the English system was
to have the vicar send a transcript of his parish register to the
bishop at regular intervals (probably once a year, although I must
check this). In some cases the "Bishop's Transcripts" are all that
survive (fire, water, or other means of destruction being frequent
over the years). Unfortunately, as with all transcripts, errors do
creep in and the original PRs may have had details that the vicar
didn't bother to transcribe (particularly if he had a busy year).
