Subject: Subject lines - was PLEASE stick to genealogy
Date: Tue, 3 May 2005 11:16:48 +1000

Dear All,

It was good that the subject line got changed on this one and not so good that the change in subject did not back track its origins. Could people, when changing subject lines give some ref to the origins of the new thread by including it as (for instance) a "was ....." etc

Try also to make your subject lines as self explanatory as possible and appropriate to the main content. Some readers like the subject line, or a more comprehensive introduction repeated near the beginning of the message as the original subject line can get buried in the header info on their systems.

In relation to adding new stuff at the top, the bottom or in line. This argument will rage for years as there will always be a pitched battle between purists and pragmatists. I can't remember the positions attributed to either side but most people want to do a quick glance before reading on which would indicate that replies or a synopsis should be up the top and a ref to new material added inline (and marked to stand out) or at the bottom. There have been multiple instances of messages coming in where there was nothing at the top, nothing at the bottom and the only way we could work out that it was inline was to compare the message with a prior message.

where searching for people use name, sogn, amt and year of interest in the subject line and people with no time will suddenly help you with half a genealogy tree for that village (because they are all related)

ghokans, could you please identify yourself, I am not sure if you are a Ghurkha or your name is really Geranium Harmonious Okans (known to his mates as OK)

Cheers

Col

But their subject line told you at a glance that this might just be one
of those interesting posts where you get to know a little more about
your fellow posters who so graciously share their time to help us out
when we get stuck with our genealogy.

I have no problem with this

Laurie

There are other forums for general chat and reminiscences.
