To List,
I also have a question about this baptism record. See:
http://home.comcast.net/~hellmers/nikoline_nielsen/
This child, given the name Nikoline Kirstine Nielsen
in the baptism record, was the child of the unmarried
Jensine Marie Nielsen, a daughter of Niels Sørensen
Fisker in Overby (As sogn). The child was born 16
December 1880, was baptized at home two days later,
and was presented in church the next April. The
alleged father was Hans Laursen of Korning sogn, who
was "currently in Horsens."
It was suggested on the List some time ago that a
child would receive the name of the father, even
though the couple was not married. In this case, the
child was named Nielsen (the same as the mother's
name) and not Hansen, had she been named for the
alleged father. There is no evidence that the mother
and the alleged father intended to be married.
A further part of this story is that on 6 May 1882,
the mother, Jensine Marie Nielsen, married Niels Peder
Andersen in As Kirke (As sogn, Bjerre herred, Vejle
amt). After the family emigrated to the U. S., the
child used the surname name Andersen.
My question: If the couple did not intend to be
married, would the child be given the mother's
family's name, and not the alleged father's name?
Norm
