Subject: [DK] Pre-printed Parish Register Headings
Date: Wed, 3 Jan 2007 21:42:21 -0800 (PST)
This was extracted from a 1989 copyrighted pamphlet,
"Parish Register Examples - DENMARK", a photocopy of
which I received from the Danish Emigrant
Museum/Genealogy Center in Elk Horn, Iowa in 1998.
(There were similar pamphlets for sale at the Family
History Library in Salt Lake City for parish & census
registers, genealogy terms, handwriting, Gothic
examples, and other subjects for different countries.
I bought several when I visited there in 1999 to
discover my Danish great-grandfather and his sisters.
I do not know if any are now available on FamilySearch
or the LDS FHL website, but I suspect they are still
for sale at FHL and possibly can be ordered through
your local FHC.)
Parish registers AFTER 1814 used preprinted column
headings. (Earlier registers were probably
handwritten in ledgers, with or without handwritten
column headers. I have seem some pre-1800 birth
records just listinfo abbreviated info in paragraph
format.)
Fields from left-right (some split between 2 facing
pages)
I think the registers are organized in the order of
the headings, but I cannot say with certainty.
TIP: Know and understand the Danish terms for various
occupations/statuses as they are often abbreviated in
these records. Also some placenames are abbreviated,
or changed spellings over time.
The Danish headings are printed in Gothic/German print
type; the handwriting is also Gothic/Danish, so some
characters are NOT directly translated into English
(such as "fsen" means "ssen").

(Remember, people's movements were recorded in church
records. TILGANGSLISTE and AFGANGSLISTE records, if
found, are often a good way to determine if a
like-named person belonged in your family. Families
migrated together, then the grown children moved away
to work or marry - giving a clue as to where to look next.)
