I received a report this week which included the following
Dennys/Denneys in Madison County, Arkansas. It appears to contain at
least two different Denny/Denney lines, and it appears that they settled
only about 15-20 miles apart. The DENNYs settled primarily in Township
18N, Range 27W, while the DENNEYs settled mainly in Townships 17 & 18N
and R25W. There are only the listings from Madison Co., AR (from
Arkansas Pre-1908 Homestead and Cash Patent--about 200,000 records total
) which can be viewed in more detail on RootsWeb at:

(Bill D. Note: I suspect this last LeRoy should be DENNY, since he's
near the other Dennys.)

The DENNYs appear to be descended from Zachariah (b ca 1730/1731; m Mary
). Here's what little I have on Stanford Denny's family so far:

1. Stanford DENNY was born in 1798 in NC (to Claiborn B. & Mary [Rison]
Denny). He married Martha ______?. Martha was born about 1809 in NC.
They had the following children:

2 i. LeRoy DENNY was born in 1831.
3 ii. William DENNY was born in 1833.

The DENNEYs in the Madison County list above, appear to descend from
James Denny (b ca 1750/1753), son of Samuel Denny (b ca 1720). Here's
what I have so far on this Madison County bunch (three generations
printed out only):

FIRST GENERATION

1. Burnett DENNEY was born in 1808 in White County, TN. Died in Sep
1898 in Alabam, Madison County, AR. Per Carole Hammett, he migrated as
follows:

1807: TN
1836: IL
1838: AR
1843: MO
1847: AR

He was listed in the 1830 White County, TN census. Males: 1<5; 1=20-30
and Females: 1=15-20; 1=20-30. It appears that a sister of his or his
wife's was living with them and that their first son, John M. was born
by the time of the census.

He was in the 1850 Madison County, AR census; War Eagle Twp.

Burnett also shows up in the Homestead Patent land records of Madison
County, AR on 1 July, 1859 and on 1 Oct, 1860. He had 80 acres in Sec.
17, T17N, R25W and 40 acres in Sec. 18, T17N, R25W. A Bennett Denney
shows up 30 June, 1882 in the same section. (Bill D. Note: I wonder if
he's a missing son of Burnett??)

Burnett married Priscilla DOYLE before 1830. Priscilla DOYLE was born
on 7 Aug 1808 in SC. Died on 6 Jan 1891 in Alabam, Madison County, AR.
They had the following children:

2 i. John M. DENNEY was born before Jun 1830 in TN. It appears
that he was listed in the 1830 census, so had to be born before that
date.

4 iii. Albert DENNEY was born in 1835 in IL. Supported by the
1850 Madison County, AR census; War Eagle Twp.
5 iv. Francis DENNEY was born in 1837 in AR. Supported by the
1850 Madison County, AR census; War Eagle Twp.

7 vi. Jasper DENNEY was born in 1844 in MO. Supported by the
1850 Madison County, AR census; War Eagle Twp.

SECOND GENERATION

3. Martha J. DENNEY was born in 1832 in TN. The 1850 Madison County, AR
census supports the year; War Eagle Twp. She married Joseph M. DOAK.

6. James Madison DENNEY was born on 19 Dec 1842 in MO?. Died on 24 May
1923 in Alabam, Madison County, AR. He shows up in Madison County, AR
Homestead Patent Records on 15 July, 1875 (80 acres in Sec. 17, T17N,
R25W) and on 17 Feb., 1881 with 40 acres in Sec. 33, T18N, R25W. A
James Denney also appears on 15 Dec., 1882 with 40 acres in Sec. 8, T17N
, R25W which may be him.

He married Alice George BERRY. Alice George BERRY was born on 15 Oct
1857 in Alabam, Madison County, AR. Died on 13 Jul 1911 in Alabam,
Madison County, AR.

They had the following child:

He also married Mary Elizabeth DANIEL on 29 Dec 1862.

They had the following child:

8. Mary Ethel DENNEY was born in 1847 in AR. Supported by the 1850
Madison County, AR census; War Eagle Twp. She married James HAYES.
James HAYES was born between 1846/1847 in TN. Per the 1870 Madison
County, AR census, they were household #74; needs to be verified further
to be sure I have the right person/spouse here. They had the following
children:

11 i. Albert HAYES was born between 1867/1868 in AR.
12 ii. Melrose May? HAYES was born about Feb 1870 in AR.

THIRD GENERATION

9. James Berry DENNEY was born on 9 Feb 1900 in Alabam, Madison County,
AR. Died on 31 Jan 1969 in Springdale, AR. He married Audrey Ona
HARWOOD on 9 Aug 1919. Audrey Ona HARWOOD was born on 22 Jan 1901 in
Huntsville, AR. Died on 22 Nov 1976 in Springdale, AR. They had the
following child:

10. James Allison DENNEY was born on 26 Oct 1862 in Madison County, AR.
Died after 15 Jul 1927 in Alabam, Madison County, AR. He shows up in
Madison County Homestead Grant land records on 26 Mar., 1890 in Sec. 33,
T18N, R25W (160 acres) and in Sec. 32, T18N, R25W (0 acres).

He married Emeline "Emma" FROST on 24 Feb 1884. Emeline "Emma" FROST
was born on 17 Jun 1866 in Humansville, Polk County, MO. Died on 28 Dec
1955 in Tulsa, OK. Buried in Alabam, Madison County, AR.

They had the following children:

17 iv. James Doss DENNEY was born after 1884.
18 v. Frieda Leana DENNEY was born on 15 Apr 1905 in War Eagle,
Benton County, AR. Died on 27 Oct 1958 in Lincoln, AR. Apparently, she
married a Pitts? per Marie Graves' chart.

I now have at least three different Denny/Denney lines in Madison
County, AR. One of my granduncles also lived in Madison County from
shortly after 1900 until about 1908, when he moved to Eads, Colorado.
I'll list him in case anyone runs across him in the Madison Co. records:

1. Clarence Leroy DENNEY was born on 22 Mar 1870 in Howard Lake, Wright
County, MN (to Wm. Denny, b 1828 in Ohio). Died on 1 May 1955 in Tacoma
, Pierce County, WA. He married Florence Virginia HIGGENBOTHAM about
1895. Florence Virginia HIGGENBOTHAM was born on 8 Feb 1873 in Tazewell
, Tazewell County, VA. Died on 13 Sep 1953 in Milton, Pierce County, WA
. They had the following children:

William "Bill" J. THOMAS was born about 1890 in IL. Died on 30 Dec 1982
in Oconto Falls, Oconto County, WI. They had the following children:

3. Russell P. DENNEY was born about 1900. Died on 22 Jun 1985 in Fort

Lane County, KS. Florence MORRIS, died in 1957. He also married (2)
Laura May NEIMAN on 10 May 1958 in Eads, Kiowa County, KS.

4. Lois DENNEY was born about 1902 in War Eagle? Benton County? AR.
Died after Nov 1986 in Phoenix, Maricopa County? AZ?. She married
Rolland E. GEORGE in 1935 in Fort Wayne, Allen County, IN. Rolland E.
GEORGE, died after 1948 in AZ?.

5. Phyllis DENNEY was born on 5 Oct 1905 in War Eagle, Benton County,
Arkansas. Died on 18 Oct 1948 in Ogden, Weber County, Utah. Buried on
22 Oct 1948 in Tacoma, Pierce County, WA. She married Alvin HUFF in
Gary, IN. Alvin HUFF was born about 27 Feb 1912. Died about Nov 1967
in Chicago, Cook County, IL. She also married Leo W. PENCE about 1928
in CO?. Leo W. PENCE was born about 17 Sep 1907. Died about Jun 1982
in Hendricks County, IN.

6. Olive DENNEY was born in 1910 in Eads, Kiowa County, CO. Died after
Nov 1986 in Phoenix, AZ. She married Hugh SCHILTHUIS on 10 Jun 1937 in
Eads, Kiowa County, CO. Hugh SCHILTHUIS, died in 1981 in Manitou
Springs, El Paso County, CO. They had the following children:

13 ii. Robyn Sue SCHILTHUIS

7. Cleon L. DENNEY was born on 30 Apr 1912 in Eads, Kiowa County, CO.
Died on 14 Jul 1985 in Broken Bow, Custer County, NE (his home). Buried
on 19 Jul 1985 in Mullen, Custer County, NE (Cedar View Cemetery). He
married Freda KELLY before 1942 in Seattle, King County, WA. They had
the following children:

He also married Gladyce LELACHEUR on 14 Feb 1973 in Broken Bow, Custer
County, NE.

It appears that Madison County, AR was a crossroads for some
Denneys/Dennys and others settled permanently. I've not yet figured out
what my granduncle Clarence Denney was doing there (lived in War Eagle
Township near James Denny's descendants, apparently). Any comments?
