The sack disguise is something of a tradition; I have some photos from 1901 showing
one (child) member of the Handsworth Mumming team wearing exactly that. Another
uses a sack but with a ram's horns on a wooden 'head'.

There are many variations to the words of The Derby Ram and I'm trying to collate
them as an on-going project. (All donations welcome... even the obscene ones<g>).
I wrote twelve new verses one rainy afternoon and even made up a version based on an
event reported in the press last year...

If the project ever gets finished, can I include your story please? - there's no
munny I'm afraid<g>.

i was still a small boy i played the part of the tup. my "costume" was a potato sack
with the two corners tied with string.i expect this was supposed to make them look
like ears!. Sarah's e-mail is about right but we sang a few words different-"to make
a pair of aprons to last them forty years and "to make a pair of footballs for they
were just the size " also our chorus was "fey ley ,fey ley , fey ley nanny go ley."
we used to 'do' our play at the Comrades club ,the Dicks club and anywhere else we
could manage to get into. i have forgotten so much about it but i do remember being
pleased that i had the potato sack over my head, nobody knew who i was and all i had
to do was fall over when the 'butcher' stuck me with his knife. i wasn't very old.
