Hi Leanna,

The IGI isn't totally reliable - your Seth WARD may just not have made it
there. Perhaps the coverage of Repton doesn't stretch as far as 1848.? Or
perhaps he wasn't even christened so wouldn't be the Parish Registers
anyway?

In my opinion, speaking as a relative novice, the civil registration entry
is most likely him so I would go ahead and order the birth certificate and
hope for the best!

I hope I'm not about to be shot down in flames by the more experienced among
us...!

| 2) Bit more complex but maybe someone can advise. Have Seth WARD and
family in
| 1881 census--100% sure its my gang living on Up Brook St Derby. Seth
WARD,
| born Repton, gives age at time as 32 so must be born in 1848 or 1849,
right?
| Go to civil registration and find Seth WARD in 4th quarter 1848, in
Burton.
| Good, I think, must be him. Check out online IGI and damned if there
isn't
| THREE Seth WARDs born in Repton one in 1827, one in 1841 & one in 1845.
My man
| isn't there. And no marriages that I can find. Quick check of Vital
Records
| Index and nothing. Here's my question: is the birth year indicated by
virtue
| of the 1881 census reliable enough to go on here? How can I ever know
which is
| my Seth WARD if I don't know his parents names? (maybe wouldn't be so
anal
| about all this except that according to the 1881 census, his wife
Elizabeth is
| 2 years older than he says he is. Made me wonder. What do you generous
| helpers think?
