The part about knowing which church it is, is only sometimes the case
depending on how willing the local office is.

I have submitted more than a few to local offices with just names and
dates,a nd although they have taken mor ethan the usual couple of days to
respond, most come up withthe goods.

It seems to depend what you're looking for. William Smith marrying Sarah
Jones in Manchester is a pretty hopeless task, but if the names are slightly
out of the ordinary or you can specify a quarter or a year, you can usually
get a result.

Actually it's only £8 and they accept credit cards. Getting
certificates from the local records office, as you say, is slightly
cheaper but it's no good for marriages unless you happen to know
exactly which church it was.
